The Coast:
This part of Portugal is rich in natural and historical attractions. The countryside surrounding the villa is protected all the way to the sea and is abundant with wild flowers, birds and butterflies, craggy rocks and secluded paths. A short walk from the villa leads to awe-inspiring cliffs; venture on a little further and you are rewarded with the sight of a natural blow-hole, created by the sheer force of the Atlantic waves. Turn left at the fork and instead of reaching the cliffs, you are led down a winding path surrounded but wild flowers, all the way to Adraga Beach.
Visible from the villa is the famous Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point in Portugal and Europe; it is well worth a visit.
Sintra:
About a 15 minute drive from Casa de Gallo lays Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and an area rich in natural beauty and historical interest. Attractions include the fabulous 19th c. Pena Palace and the Castelo dos Muros ,which offers a breath-taking view of the Sintra-Cascais National Park and the 15th /16th c. Palacio Nacional de Sintra. The Sintra Mountain Range, one of the largest parks in the Lisbon area, (Serra de Sintra) is also not to be missed.
Convento dos Capuchos:
Constructed amid the rocks of Sintra this secluded monastery is a fantastic example of Christian austerity. The chapel, refectory and living quarters are cut into the craggy rocks, and underline the intention of meditation inherent in the project. Of particular note are the altar’s inlay work, some 17th Century frescos by André Reinoso and an 18th Century frontispiece of azulejos.
